The Constellation

The constellation of Scorpio lies in the southern sky between the constellations of Libra and Sagittarius. It is at about 16 hours and 30 minutes right ascension and 30 degrees south declination. The brightest star in this constellation is the Antares.

The constellation of Scorpio is visible until the middle of September. It belongs to one of the 88 modern constellations. This constellation was first discovered by Ptolemy. Some other stars in the Scorpio constellation are Acrab, Dschubba, Shaula and Lesath.

Meteor showers

There are two meteor showers that occur in the constellation of Scorpio.

  1.Alpha Scorpiids- begins on April 16th and end on May 9th. The peak activity would be on the 3rd of May and the brightest star here is the Antares.

  2.June Scorpiids- Peaks on the 5th of June. This is close to the zodiac Ophiuchus and emits about 20 meteors per hour.

The Scorpion

The Scorpion is the symbol of the zodiac sign of Scorpio. It is used to represent revenge and justice which characterize a Scorpio native.

It is said that Artemis, the Goddess of hunting used to spend time with Orion, which annoyed her brother Apollo because he knew that Orion didn’t have the right intentions with her. He then sent a giant scorpion to kill Orion. The scorpion, managed to kill him. As remembrance of this episode Zeus decided to put both Orion and the giant scorpion up in the skies creating the constellation of Scorpio.

The Scorpion is a very calm animal, that is not aggressive on its own. However when provoked it stings the attacker. Thus the Scorpion is a symbol of danger and resilience. It is quite a difficult animal to understand with its great defense mechanism.

The Glyph

The glyph of Scorpio is similar to that of the glyph of the zodiac sign of Virgo. It is a calligraphic form of the letter “m” which ends in a tail like formation representing the sting of the Scorpion. The three vertical lines in the glyph represent the three levels of consciousness of humans.

Age

The Age of Scorpio extended between 17,500 and 19,000 BCE. It represents a time when there was no perfection in life, however there was a sense of optimism surrounding it. There was an anticipation towards the golden age. The Age of Scorpio was a period when myth and magic where practised as part of life. People started to believe in dragons, unicorns and spirit forces. The Age of Scorpio indicated the last part of the underworld where darkness reigned.

The age of Scorpio was the Ice age glaciation time and stone tools were being developed by humans. Humans did not hunt, but fed on plants and meat scavenged from other meat-eaters.

The ancient Egyptians associated the zodiac sign of Scorpio with the Scorpion Goddess of Serket. It is said that Serket had the head of a Scorpion. Serket was worshipped by the Egyptians because they believed that this Goddess protects the women in childbirth.
